| Animal rescue in Arizona: One woman makes an enormous difference |
| Unwanted dogs and cats perish by the thousands in Maricopa County shelters. They have for years squeezed by the unrelenting pressure of pet overpopulation. The local rescue community was caring but scattered and uncoordinated. That didn’t sit well with Phoenix resident and animal lover Bari Mears. Shrugging off naysayers she formed the Phoenix Animal Care Coalition (PACC 911) to spur adoptions. That was more than 10 years ago and thousands of homeless dogs and cats live now comfortably thanks to Mears’s steely determination to make a difference.
“Too many dogs and cats lingered in shelters when they could’ve been adopted,” Mears said. “PACC 911 brings people and pets together so more lives are saved.” As soon as the blistering weather lifts its grip on Phoenix in October, PACC 911 off-site adoptions begin.

The main thoroughfare heading east of Cusco soon empties out onto dirt, quickly becoming a winding road, hugging the side of never-ending mountains going higher with each breath-taking turn. After about 60 miles—and four hours later—you finally come to the small town of Paucartambo, known for its Festival of the Virgin of Carmen, the syncretic celebration of pre-Colombian Andean rites and the town’s Catholic patron saint, which draws throngs of revelers in mid-July.
